CONVERSATIONS I, 2009.
3 Channel Video Installation.
April 2 - 5 2009.
UCLA Bermont Gallery, Los Angeles, California.
Conversations I is a 3 Channel Installation consisting of video, sound, garden furniture, written word, and printed matter.
The installation is the outcome of my personal investigation into issues of memory, relationship and loss brought forth by the death of my Mother on October 28, 2008. Conversations I documents my grieving process during the first four months after her death.
One side of the free-standing wall in the center of the gallery shows a portrait of my Mother, the other side a portrait of myself. Scattered on the floor are letters I wrote to my Mother after her death. The letters are written on a type writer, allowing them to become an unrevised stream of consciousness. On the rear projection wall are time-lapse videos of my Mother’s house and garden, the home in which I grew up.
While all is familiar, it is now void.
At the back of the gallery I have placed the garden table and chairs where my Mother and I would sit and talk. On the table is a book with a chronological compilation of the letters, interspersed with hand-made paper containing flowers from her garden, implanting her spirit into the pages.
