Sound: Accept by Emily-Jane Robinson. Continuous Loop.
In the modern era a disconnect has occurred between our minds and our bodies. As a result of this, many have a distorted perception of beauty. A certain estrangement has occurred between our bodies and space – most specifically, the space we occupy in our personal and unique environments.
The body has the capacity to reflect, externally, a form of inner emotional pain or terror. In my own human experience I have inflicted damage within my body and in many respects, denied its appetite. Before and during the time that I was undergoing the process of filming the videos for Appetite, I had a skewed understanding of my body. I wanted to create a piece that enabled viewers to see my body as it really was and in turn allowed me to see the physical reality of my body.
This piece contains eight videos designed for a specific space. I imagine the ideal space to be a room containing four surrounding walls on which each video will be projected. The eight videos are divided into two groups of four, and subsequently the projections are designed to alternate between these two groups every three minutes. In addition, I have created a piece of sound that is also a central part of the environment. The sound includes a recitation of thoughts which illuminate my struggle and journey in the beginnings of understanding and accepting my body for its physical reality.
