California is a multi-channel video and photographic installation which includes a body of photographic work of the same title as well as a feature-length Super 8 film created in California during the Summer of 2011.
Within California there is a series of 240 35mm photographic slides and a Super 8 mm film which spans over 3 hours in length. The film documents the time I spent in California between June and July 2011, revisiting the group of friends who were my primary photographic interest before I moved to the UK. California is an autobiographical portrait, but on more basic terms, it is a film about life in The Golden State and how it feels to be young there.
The equipment chosen, the considered scale of the projections and the nature of the self contained space emphasise the immersive and experiential and sensory qualities of the installation which has been specifically designed to transport viewers from the gallery into the preserved memory of California.
